The Cherokee County School District has earned national recognition for the second consecutive year for excellence in financial reporting!
CCSD’s Office of Financial Management this week received the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Financial Officers Association for its Fiscal Year 2021 Annual Comprehensive Financial Report.
The Annual Comprehensive Financial Report is considered the gold standard in financial reporting, and the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence is the highest form of recognition in governmental accounting and financial reporting. Earning the award represents a significant accomplishment by a government and its management, as it requires their report to pass muster with an impartial panel that judges on high standards. These standards include “demonstrating a constructive spirit of full disclosure to clearly communicate its financial story and motivate potential users and user groups to read the report.”
CCSD’s report, compiled by Chief Financial Officer Kenneth Owen and his staff, contains records already created by CCSD, such as financial statements and independent audit reports, but presents them all in one publication. The report and numerous other financial and operational records are posted in the Open CCSD transparency section of CCSD’s website: https://www.cherokeek12.net/Content2/open-ccsd.
“We’re so proud of the work Ken and our finance team do every day to ensure the highest standards of financial stewardship, and this award honors that excellence,” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower said. “They go above and beyond governmental requirements to produce this gold standard report, which demonstrates their commitment and their exemplary service to our community. Congratulations and thank you!”
Mr. Owen said the award recognizes the excellence of his entire staff and their work all year long to ensure the highest standards of governmental accounting and financial reporting. Executive Director of Financial Management Marjorie DeFrank and Supervisor of Financial Compliance and Reporting Jenna L. Williams both additionally received the Award of Financial Reporting Achievement from the association to honor their role in preparing the report.
The Cherokee County School Board and Dr. Hightower will recognize them at the School Board’s September meeting.
